Gastroenterologists emphasize that digestion starts in the mouth, where food is broken down into smaller pieces and mixed with saliva, which contains enzymes that initiate the digestive process. Consuming food too quickly results in larger pieces reaching the stomach, hindering efficient digestion and potentially causing discomfort.

Common symptoms associated with fast eating include bloating, acid reflux, heartburn, and a prolonged sensation of fullness. Additionally, the speed at which meals are consumed can interfere with the body’s natural system for regulating appetite. The brain receives signals from hormones released during digestion to indicate fullness, but these signals generally take 15 to 20 minutes to be recognized. Rapid consumption means individuals may continue to eat before these signals are acknowledged, increasing the likelihood of overeating.

Overeating over time can lead to weight gain, larger waist circumference, and a higher risk of developing insulin resistance and conditions such as type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Rapid eating can also cause more pronounced spikes in blood sugar levels post-meal, putting additional stress on the body’s insulin response. For those with digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia, eating too quickly can exacerbate their symptoms.

To counter these potential health risks, experts recommend dedicating a minimum of 20 minutes to finish a meal and chewing food thoroughly. It is suggested to avoid distractions like phones or work during meals and to be attentive to early signs of fullness. Incorporating vegetables and other fiber-rich foods at the start of meals might also aid in promoting better digestion and healthier eating habits.
