Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has condemned the recent attacks by Houthi forces on Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the need for a diplomatic solution to the Yemen conflict. In a telephone discussion with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Tajani expressed Italy’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and stressed the importance of protecting civilians and infrastructure.
During the conversation, Tajani thanked Saudi authorities for their efforts to ensure the safety of Italian citizens residing in the Kingdom. He also underscored Italy’s commitment to supporting United Nations-led efforts aimed at resolving the Yemen crisis through peaceful means.
The ministers also addressed regional security concerns, particularly focusing on maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. They highlighted the significance of maintaining freedom of navigation and ensuring the security of commercial shipping routes, which are vital for the stability of the Gulf region.
Tajani further mentioned the European Union’s Operation Aspides, a naval mission initiated in February 2024 to safeguard shipping activities in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. He noted the importance of reinforcing this operation to bolster regional security.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet issued a stern warning to the Houthis, cautioning them of potential consequences for their continued attacks. The Cabinet reaffirmed the necessity of safeguarding navigation through the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, while also praising the international Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen for its ongoing efforts against the Houthi group.
