The United States is set to implement tariffs as high as 100% on certain drones and their components, a move driven by national security concerns and an effort to diminish reliance on foreign supply chains predominantly controlled by China. These tariffs specifically target unmanned aircraft systems, including larger drones over 25 kilograms and those with security-related features like thermal cameras and docking stations. Such products will incur a 100% tariff, whereas smaller drones will face a 25% tariff.
Alongside this, the US will levy tariffs on drones and components from various key trading partners. Products originating from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will encounter a 15% tariff, while those from the United Kingdom will be subject to a 10% tariff, provided the technology, hardware, and software are sourced within these countries or the US. These new tariffs are scheduled to be enforced starting September 3.
The White House has articulated that these measures are designed to bolster the US defense and industrial sectors, promote domestic drone production, and generate American jobs by lessening the dependency on international suppliers. Currently, China maintains a significant influence in the global drone market, with DJI, based in Shenzhen, holding a substantial portion of the US commercial drone market, despite facing US restrictions due to national security issues.
US authorities have expressed concerns that drones manufactured abroad could pose threats related to surveillance, sensitive data acquisition, and potential attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has previously advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks. This development unfolds amid ongoing trade and technology disputes between Washington and Beijing, with China having imposed its own restrictions on drone exports to the US and taking actions against various American firms.
