King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH) has emerged as a pivotal player in clinical research within Saudi Arabia, conducting nearly half of all clinical trials registered in the country during the first half of 2025. This underscores the hospital’s significant contribution to advancing healthcare and clinical research. The hospital’s robust clinical research framework is driven by a dedicated team comprising investigators, research nurses, pharmacists, coordinators, data specialists, and regulatory and ethics teams, all working together to ensure the seamless progression of clinical studies from planning to execution, encompassing patient recruitment, trial delivery, safety monitoring, and data management.
Since establishing a centralized Clinical Trials service in 2020, KFSH has effectively coordinated research initiatives spearheaded by its clinicians and investigators. This service facilitates various aspects of clinical trials, including feasibility assessments, study activation, trial operations, patient recruitment, investigational medicines, data quality, safety reporting, and adherence to regulatory and ethical standards. In the initial half of 2025, the hospital managed 104 active clinical trials and initiated 80 new studies spanning diverse medical fields such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune and musculoskeletal conditions, dermatology, gastroenterology, liver diseases, and endocrine and metabolic disorders. These efforts provide patients with complex conditions access to innovative treatment options and generate vital clinical evidence pertinent to Saudi Arabia’s healthcare needs.
A notable breakthrough in KFSH’s research endeavors is the treatment of the first patient in a Phase I clinical trial utilizing locally manufactured genetically engineered CAR-T cells for relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This trial exemplifies the integration of local scientific expertise, advanced biomanufacturing capabilities, and specialized clinical care, setting a precedent in the realm of cell therapy research.
The hospital’s centralized clinical-trial infrastructure is not only facilitating local research but also enabling participation in complex international studies. KFSH’s robust research governance and specialized clinical capabilities lay the groundwork for fruitful collaborations with multinational research partners while maintaining rigorous standards for patient safety, ethics, data quality, and regulatory compliance. The hospital is poised to showcase its innovative approach to clinical research and healthcare at the C3 US NYC Davos of Healthcare Summit 2026 in New York City on September 14.
Recognized among leading academic medical centers both globally and within the Middle East, KFSH has garnered accolades for its healthcare brand and has been featured in international hospital rankings. This recognition further cements its standing as a frontrunner in clinical research and healthcare innovation, reflecting its unwavering commitment to pioneering advancements in medicine.
