Iran has declared that its framework agreement with the United States is no longer in effect, pointing to perceived violations by Washington. This announcement comes amid escalating regional tensions, according to statements made by Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi. He outlined that Tehran has opted to suspend the agreement, emphasizing the nation’s priority to safeguard its interests under the current volatile circumstances.
The framework agreement, which was established in mid-June, aimed to lay the groundwork for resolving hostilities between the two nations. It included a timeline for the parties to negotiate a final settlement within 60 days and contained clauses about reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz. However, Gharibabadi accused the U.S. of not adhering to its obligations under the Islamabad declaration of intent, which was a critical component of the agreement.
Since early April, a ceasefire had been in place, offering a temporary lull in hostilities.
