The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom have joined forces to launch a significant $10 million food security initiative in Yemen. This collaborative project, aimed at bolstering the resilience of vulnerable communities, is being executed through a partnership between Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Both nations will contribute equally, with each providing $5 million to fund this crucial effort.
Implemented by the United Nations World Food Programme, the initiative targets several key Yemeni governorates: Al-Mahrah, Hadramout, Aden, Al-Dhale, and Lahij. The project’s primary focus is to facilitate conditional cash transfers that enhance food access for affected populations, assist in the restoration of productive infrastructure, and ultimately aid families in moving from immediate food aid towards self-sufficiency.
Apart from addressing immediate food needs, the project also emphasizes long-term development and sustainability. It includes provisions for vocational training and support for local authorities, as well as efforts to enhance governance and manage community assets sustainably. This comprehensive approach seeks to empower communities by equipping them with the necessary tools and skills to ensure their own food security and economic stability.
This initiative is part of a broader spectrum of humanitarian efforts by Saudi Arabia, orchestrated through KSrelief. Since 2015, the aid agency has launched more than 4,400 projects, valued at over $8.5 billion, spanning 113 countries worldwide. The current project in Yemen underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to global humanitarian support and its strategic collaboration with international partners to address pressing crises.
